With the spotlight firmly on Wilmington, Ohio, following Amazon’s launch of air cargo operations there, the airport wants to reopen a second runway. Its ambitions don’t stop there – it has received $3m from the state to improve its infrastructure and existing runway. Amazon how has 350,000 sq ft at the airport, and a permit has been requested by the airport authority to add a 6,000 sq ft, two-storey warehouse. The hope from the local community is that Amazon will open a sortation centre too. It may, of course, all depend on whether Amazon’s airline suppliers manage to maintain a low-cost, high-quality operation, that will keep the e-tailer interested in maintaining and growing its own air freight network.
