For anyone interested in Amazon’s distribution and its new network of “sortation” (we didn’t realise that was a word, but anyhoo) centres, this article is great. It explains Amazon’s strategy and its two major supply chain weaknesses – the need for extra staff at Christmas, and more importantly its outbound transportation network. In time, it notes, Amazon will be able to take over increasing amounts of its last mile deliveries, removing its reliance on the integrators. The sortation centres are key, “it is a truly winning logistical strategy that is based on sanity.”
