US millennials are said to be distraught at Trump’s latest tirade, because of the threats to ‘avocado toast’. The US devours some 80% of Mexico’s avocados – and prices have already jumped nearly 50% since recent US-Mexican border troubles. The US imported 900,000 tonnes of avocados from Mexico last year, 10 times more than from elsewhere and 10 times more than it produces itself. While Trump seems to have stepped back from threats to close the border, there has already been an impact on the popular fruit, reported Reuters.
