Surging online deliveries are creating backlogs in US supply chains with both Walmart and UPS reporting delays as Christmas orders rack up. Reuters reports that “soaring” online orders led to blockages in the distribution network of the world’s largest retailer. The problem seems to stem from the Thanksgiving period. And, despite months, of preparation, networks seem incapable of managing the spike that accompanies the Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions. The same was true for UPS with The Chicago Tribune noting that online orders “overwhelmed” the company’s network.
