After much lobbying, and despite the EU’s decision to postpone payments for non-EU flights, President Obama has ruled that US airlines do not need to comply with the Emissions Trading Scheme. While some sceptics could say there is a certain irony in the US government choosing not to comply with other countries’ laws, but – in security terms especially – being happy to dole it out internationally themselves, others may say that it can only add pressure on ICAO to come up with a global solution. The Commission’s Connie Hedegaard, incidentally, is not amused.
