The International Maritime Organization (IMO) wrapped up its biannual decarbonisation negotiations last week with an agreement on greenhouse emissions that will lead to levies being applied to the most polluting vessels from 2028 onwards.

Here’s some key takeaways.

The agreement itself is not yet binding. The way the IMO – specially its Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) – works is that members meet in Spring to talk the talk and then reconvene in the Autumn to vote.
