The International Chamber of Shipping is calling for punitive measures in an effort to force global shipping into a greener model. BBC reports that Guy Platten, secretary-general of the association which represents 90% of the global fleet, has called for a global tax on carbon emissions. Mr Platten said a “global solution is the only one that’s going to work”, adding that the tax would incentivise shipowners to invest in new technology. As a sector, shipping is responsible for 2% of global emissions, putting it ahead of Germany.
