Australia managed to escape the worst of the global financial crisis, mostly due to its huge reserves of coal and iron ore and continued Chinese demand for those commodities. However, the recent decision of Toyota to close its Australian manufacturing base could see up to 50,000 jobs lost in the southern parts of the country through the impact of the closure on the supply chain. A dark day indeed.
