South Korea’s remaining deepsea container shipping line, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), today announced a recruitment drive of ex-Hanjin staff, laid off since the carrier’s bankruptcy.
HMM chief executive Chang Keun Yoo said “We [want to] acquire the best shipping workforce via one-to-one interviews. We will fully support Hanjin’s workforce to help them quickly adapt and adjust into HMM’s corporate culture and come into their own.”
The company said it wanted to initially hire 131 former members of Hanjin’s workforce, “including onshore, offshore and overseas staff and ship managers”.
The number will then grow by another 41 next month to include more offshore staff and has longer-term plans to hire between 40 and 50 additional ex-Hanjin seafarers and officers to fulfil its fleet expansion plans, which include acquiring additional vessels and adding its first ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) to its fleet.
This will bring the total number of rehired ex-Hanjin staff up to around 220, but it is relative drop in the ocean considering the number of people who lost their jobs in what is fast becoming the biggest shipping bankruptcy in history. According to Hanjin, it employed around 5,000 staff worldwide, managed from four regional centres in the US, Europe and Asia.
