Kenya’s regional reputation for logistics is in doubt as congestion has hit its main port. Operational problems at Nairobi’s Inland Container Dept have caused issues along the transport chain. The government has ordered that 40% of cargo arriving at the port of Mombasa must be moved by rail to the depot – which has caused significant congestion. The Kenyan Ports Authority has had to put notices in newspapers telling importers to clear their cargo – last week there were 2,000 cleared containers sill awaiting collection. This, along with growing trade and slow movements at the port, has caused ‘chaos’, reports The East African.
