NFI-owned Cal Cartage’s facility at the port of Los Angeles is set to close after five decades, following scrutiny over employment practices. The decision by the California port has received widespread praise from both the Teamsters union and a city councilman. Furthermore, it appears the port is already in negotiations with Australia’s Toll Global Forwarding over a lease for the site in Wilmington. In September, LA’s city council voted to review Cal Cartage’s permit as part of a campaign to pressure trucking and warehouse companies into classifying drivers as employees, rather than independent contractors.
