Veteran air cargo executive Robert van de Weg has joined ECS, following his departure from Cargo Logic Management, the UK group which includes Cargologicair.
He becomes chief commercial officer of the GSA, based in Paris. He first worked with ECS on a consultancy basis in 2017 after leaving Volga-Dnepr Group, and said “there was a ‘click’” when he got to know the management team.
“I think there are large opportunities to help develop this thriving company and to work with our airline customers in enhancing our service portfolio,” he told The Loadstar.
“Also, there continues to be large potential for more ‘classical’ GSA services, especially in tough market circumstances where we can help companies to bring costs down.
“ECS developed great ‘airline type’ business intelligence and digital tools that can help our airline customers excel in their markets. Again, this is even more important now that the markets are globally so much under pressure.
“In short, it’s a great challenge and I hope my drive, network and airline knowledge can help.”
The new CCO’s main task will be to develop and maintain business and to lead regional teams in Europe, the Americas and Asia.
“With Robert, we share the vision that it is essential that sales staff can spend as much of their time as possible on issues that improve our impact on the outside world – on our (potential) customers and our suppliers,” said Adrien Thominet, chief executive.
“I’m very confident in his ability to do this – Robert is simply the best cargo expert I know.”
Mr Van de Weg joined KLM Cargo in 1990 as a trainee and has held airline roles all over the world, including at KLM Cargo, Atlas Air, AirBridgeCargo and Cargolux.
“I had a hunch that cargo would be the most dynamic and challenging area of the air industry. And it proved to be just that,” he added.
