Driving home up the east coast of Italy as the sun set gently last night at 8.30pm, I was suddenly forced to exit the A1 motorway at Valsamoggia, about 100 miles from my destination.

My wife and I didn’t know what had happened until about 30 minutes later when we eagerly read the first reports. We expected something bad…
