Belgian transport at a standstill

A nationwide 24-hour strike in Belgium has stymied air, rail and road transport and brought Europe’s third-biggest container port to a standstill. The industrial action is the latest protest by unions opposed to the new coalition government’s austerity plans which includes scrapping an agreed cost of living rise next year and increasing the retirement age.
