In yet another effort to bolster its state-owned shipping lines, Cosco and China Shipping, the Chinese government has announced a series of measures, mostly involving tax regimes and other regulatory moves, aimed at improving the competitiveness of the Chinese lines against foreign competitors. It appears that part of the package also attempts to encourage the carriers to scrap inefficient ships earlier than is normal.
