Extraordinary, but you could sort of see it coming. Talk to any telephone engineer and they will tell you that most of their work involves installing new broadband-enabled televisions. All a household’s internet needs can be achieved through their TVs. Less predictable was the growth in sales of enormous high-definition screens. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, one manufacturer was showing off a 110-inch HD behemoth (almost an entire wall, and if anything is going to give your kids square eyes, this must surely be it) and sales of ultra-large screens reached 2m last year, and are predicted to rise to 12m this year.
