The Panama Canal expansion has been dogged by difficulties. As if a 15-day stoppage in February, during a row over who would pay for cost overruns, wasn’t enough, now labourers have downed tools and demanded a 20% wage hike. The project is now running about a year late – but employers don’t seem to be keen on agreeing what they call an “excessive” pay demand.
