Back in the day, the summer peak season was the time when container lines earned the bulk of their money, as retailers in Europe and North America stocked up their warehouses in preparation for the new school year, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year jamborees. Not any longer; changing consumer patterns and the subsequent impact on retail supply chains appear to have consigned the third-quarter peak season to history, and Drewry says this has important implications for shippers as well as carriers.
