Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water… the US west coast port of Oakland saw its largest box terminal, operated by Stevedoring Services of America (SSA), send workers home after management and the ILWU failed to agree on staffing levels for yard cranes – the terminal wants two drivers per crane, the union says three should be deployed. It’s a bit of a blow for Oakland, which late last year had seen vessel calls increase as congestion worsened at Los Angeles and Long Beach, only for that to create congestion at its facilities and lead lines to subsequently cancel a number of calls there.
