Does the world need another huge port, you might ask. Apparently so, because Xiamen is ploughing ahead with plans to develop into a global shipping hub by 2020. The port authority believes that its position on the west side of the Taiwan Straits will enable it to become China’s fourth largest international shipping centre. By 2015 cargo throughput is expected to reach 10 million teu – up from 6.47 million this year.
