Great post about a great project. In response to the looming spectre of tolls on Belgian motorways, which will hit the competiveness of the country’s surprisingly large food export industry (who knew that Belgium is the world’s largest exporter of French fries?), the ever-innovative perishables forwarder foodcareplus has teamed up with the port of Ghent, LDH and Stukwerkers to create the Flanders Reefer Platform. The project’s first phase will see reefer boxes consolidated at Stukwerkers’ container operations at Ghent and barged to the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam. A second phase will hopefully see greater involvement of shipping lines and the matching of import and export flows. “The waterway is not only environmentally friendly, but also much safer than road transport, while congestion costs are negligible. Moreover, transport by waterways is often cheaper if evaluated correctly.”
