On the day that London Heathrow and Gatwick announce their expansion proposals to the UK’s Airports Commission comes the news that Beijing is to spend $14bn on a new airport, south of the capital. It will be able to handle 72m passengers and 2m tonnes of cargo each year. Meanwhile Heathrow has finally submitted its so-called freight strategy – which appears to detail only that it will double cargo capacity if it wins the right to expand.
