Transport times in East Africa will be cut significantly after the opening of a new railway, which will link landlocked countries in the region’s central corridor. Leaders from Uganda, Rwanda, DRC Congo and Burundi met in Dar es Salaam to launch construction of the railway, which will transport cargo directly to and from Dar es Salaam port. EAC heads of state are trying to remove non-tariff barriers between the countries, and have succeeded in cutting back road blocks and police checkpoints. Both costs and transit times will be reduced.
