The US east coast port of Savannah has always been one of the most ambitious in the region, despite substantial opposition from neighbouring Charleston, which has so far succeeded in blocking attempts to win permission for crucial dredging on the Savannah River in advance of the expanded Panama Canal opening. While it continues to push for this $1.4bn project however, Savannah has embarked on plans to radically expand its geographic hinterland through its Network Georgia campaign.
