The news at the beginning of this week that e-commerce behemoth Amazon has paid $775m to buy Kiva Systems, which designs and manufactures robot warehouse operatives and automated solutions, has led some to ask whether it is entering the materials handling business itself? It has alluded to providing the system to its competitors, but Kiva’s capacity may only just cover Amazon’s own needs, this piece suggests.
