Asking a UK-based logistics journalist to write a column about a strange industry (rail freight) in a land far away (the US) was always bound to be fraught with risk.

An initial reading of the subject revealed that at least one operator, CSX, has mitigated sluggish coal and intermodal volumes by doing well with merchandise.

Inevitably, that led an uninitiated writer – all the while thinking “surely not” – to type ‘CSX t-shirts’ ...
