On the face of it, this is a parochial story about Maersk maintaining a call at the New Zealand export port of Nelson, which was threatened with losing this direct shipping link to Maersk’s transhipment hub at Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia. Read between the lines however, and there are some interesting comments about New Zealand’s bid to ban conferences, and the relationship between the world’s largest container shipping line and the exporters whose livelihoods are reliant on its services.
