In what would come as something of a major blow to European carriers, Russian media is reporting that Japan and South Korea are negotiating the resumption of flight operations with Russia, including overflight rights.
Russia’s deputy foreign minister told media that consultations with airlines were already underway – however, the Japanese government is thought to have reservations.
Russia did not impose the ban on the two countries’ airlines – it was self-imposed following Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine. Russia claims Japan is a popular destination for Russian tourists and, this month, Japan said it would open a new visa centre in Russia in January.
Meanwhile, according to Kommersant, 128 South Korean and foreign non-profit organisations have appealed to the South Korean authorities for the resumption of direct air travel with Russia.
If North Asian carriers resume overflying Russia, European carriers would be at a competitive disadvantage, as they must continue to fly around the country.
