When the 18,270teu Mary Maersk sailed from Algeciras, Spain on 21 July, it set a new world record for the highest number of containers ever loaded on a ship, at 17,603teu. The vessel on its back-haul eastbound voyage was however laden with just over 50% of empty containers for repositioning. Nonetheless, Maersk is confident that it will not be too long before the Triple-E ships are full to the gunnels westbound – a frightening thought for its smaller competitors.
