Lufthansa Cargo says it can operate up to two-thirds of its freighter schedule despite disruption from a two-day pilot strike called by the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union, beginning today.

The carrier said it had implemented “short-notice adjustments and flexible solutions” to mitigate the impact of the industrial action. These include operating selected routes with AeroLogic aircraft and crews, as well as rescheduling flights across its network.

In addition to its dedicated freighter fleet, Lufthansa Cargo is also relying on bellyhold capacity from Lufthansa Group passenger airlines, including Austrian, Swiss, Brussels, Air Dolomiti and ITA, which are seeking to add frequencies and deploy larger aircraft on services to and from Germany in an effort to offset lost capacity.

The airline added that its joint-venture partners, including Cathay Pacific and United Airlines, are continuing to operate as scheduled, providing further support to maintain flows.

Nevertheless, Lufthansa Cargo confirmed that several flights had been cancelled as a result of the strike, and warned that disruption and reduced capacity were likely to persist through tomorrow.

The carrier added it was “doing everything possible to maintain stable services for our customers and to keep critical supply chains moving as smoothly as possible”, while acknowledging the impact on shipments during the industrial action.
