Dubai's free zones are the key to its port's success

It is not the first time this argument has been put forward, but it is one that is occasionally worth re-visiting – the crucial role that free trade zones can play in capturing large volumes of cargo to a port’s immediate hinterland. No port has been as successful as Dubai in using this tool, especially given the relative lack of homegrown industries. As ever, it serves to underline the value of port-centric logistics to global supply chains.
