Chinese demand for Thai fruit has shot up, with growth of 117% in 2011, as import tariffs ended and routes into China improved. The two-day route overland on Route R3A, via Laos to China’s south east Asian gateway of Kunming, looks set to grow further – but it currently lacks the services it needs, such as controlled-temperature warehousing and specialised logistics providers, to ensure an end-to-end cold chain.
