Polly Toynbee, a well-known UK columnist for The Guardian, yesterday ventured away from her normal topic of society, to look at the UK’s shipping industry. While her concern for unpaid crew members of a ship stuck in the tiny port of Great Yarmouth will be shared by the industry, some of her other comments on shipping are likely to be disputed – such as the success of the Jones Act in supporting a local US industry, as well as the UK’s place in international shipping.
