Li & Fung’s director of government affairs certainly struck a committed tone this week in London when he described the efforts to improve garment worker conditions in Bangladesh in the wake of factory disasters in the country, and appeared to give an honest account of why these efforts have been subject to such frustrating delays. In speech to delegates at a Retail Week event, he also commented at length on trends to near-shore garment manufacturing to locations nearer to end markets – it shouldn’t surprise anyone that he was sceptical.
