Airports should enforce digitisation to improve air cargo, say stakeholders
Airports should mandate that stakeholders digitise through the use of cargo community systems – and ...
13 July 2021, EDINBURGH: Menzies Aviation, the global aviation logistics specialist, has expanded its cargo facilities by 40% at Los Angeles Airport (“LAX”) with the addition of a new warehouse. The new off-airport warehouse facility, which opened this month, will handle import cargo whilst an existing on-airport facility will continue to handle predominantly exports through one of the United States’ busiest airports. Menzies also has a third warehouse facility, which is off-airport and operated by Air Menzies International.
The dedicated import and export warehouse facilities more than doubles Menzies’ truck door capacity and in conjunction with new and efficient operating procedures for truck access will significantly enhance the customer experience. Menzies also has its own inter-terminal transport which keeps freight moving airside to landside.
With almost double the space and in recognition of significant market growth in LAX, Menzies can significantly expand its cargo operations and the new facility will provide existing airline customers with the warehouse capacity required to grow. Supported by a team of over 200 Menzies employees, all three facilities are custom bonded and collectively have the capacity to handle over 130,000 tonnes each year.
As well as upgrading existing cargo facilities, Menzies is expanding into new locations. The Americas is a region that has particular focus on this growth plan and following the successful launch of cargo operations in Miami earlier this year more is planned. Its cargo network now covers 53 locations across the globe.
John Redmond, Executive Vice President, Americas at Menzies Aviation said: “It’s a major coup to secure these facilities as space is at a premium at Los Angeles International Airport, which is currently the epicentre for imports into the United States. By creating dedicated import and export facilities we have an opportunity to grow our cargo business in one of the busiest airports in the United States. Menzies has an extensive portfolio of ground services, cargo services and fuel services at LAX and a Team of almost 800 Menzies Employees at that location, and we are excited about the opportunities created by this addition
to our cargo facilities.”
