Just because we haven’t written about it for several months, it hasn’t gone away – if anything, the driver shortage crisis has only got worse. Think of it like a tooth cavity; it is still decaying on the days when you can’t feel any pain. The Freight Transport Association now estimates the haulage industry in the UK needs 60,000 drivers in addition to the 326,000 already qualified, but currently only 20,000 are entering the profession each year. And with the evenings beginning to draw in and thoughts turning to Christmas, you can bet there will be a corresponding rise in the number of warnings about empty shop shelves and missed e-commerce deliveries due to lack of drivers.
