The US west coast port congestion is as equally painful to Asian exporters to the country as it is to North American importers, and in the case of carmakers with their lean, but highly complex, supply chains, the implications are manifold. Fuji Heavy Industries, which makes the Subaru, the most popular car in the US, is spending $60m a month on shipping parts to its North America production line by air because of the congestion crisis. Other Japanese manufacturers are equally afflicted.
