In the latest developments at Athens International Airport, global handler Swissport has taken over Skyserv Handling Services, formerly Olympic Handling. This move will not change the three existing handling arrangements. In order to streamline Customs clearance, all three cargo handlers and DHL decided to apply for simplified procedures for Customs transit regime. Such a license will reduce the daily submission of supporting documents to Customs and the face-to-face transactions, which will result in a faster throughput
As the new year unfolds bringing with it new challenges along with the old, the mood at Athens cargo community is optimistic. Although the domestic import market remains flat, international export traffic rose in 2015 by 13%. Net results for 2015 were up by 4% over 2014 and so far in 2016, January traffic is showing a healthy 3% increase over last year. A slow but steady improvement of the economy is showing through.
