The FT has published an interview with Frank Appel, DHL boss, on his philosophy for inspiring his workforce. He argues that employees are never motivated by top-line growth; instead they are more productive when aiming for customer satisfaction. His PhD in neurobiology (an interesting story in itself) has led him to believe that humans are easier to lead when they feel love, hope and purpose. And that needs to be continued through into work for a happier workforce and therefore a better one.
