Having monopolised the internet, Amazon, it seems, is well and truly focused on controlling the skies – at least for the express market. This piece from Freightwaves assesses claims that Amazon is expanding its European air operations. If true, the report suggests the control currently enjoyed by DHL, FedEx and UPS over Europe’s skies could be at threat. Claims of the carrier’s threat to its dominance were certainly rubbished by FedEx chief executive Fred Smith who derided such claims as “fantastical”. While Mr Smith may be burying his head in the sand, DHL has taken the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” approach.
