Evergreen’s chartered ship, the 20,000 teu Ever Given, made it to the port of Rotterdam this morning.
The four-month late arrival followed its grounding in the Suez Canal, blocking traffic for six days, and its subsequent arrest by the Suez Canal Authority pending compensation.
Ever Given will discharge cargo at Rotterdam’s Delta Terminal, before heading to the Euromax Terminal on 2 August to unload transhipment cargo bound for Hamburg.
It is expected to depart for the UK port of Felixstowe before heading for drydock in Dunkirk for inspection and repair, following its eventful trek from Asia, which has seen it unofficially renamed ‘ForEver Given’.
Evergreen said: “It is in the interests of all parties that import cargo which is off-loaded in Rotterdam is delivered to its consignees as quickly as possible. Evergreen will work with all concerned to ensure this happens.”
Perishable cargo will have to be disposed of, due to the length of time the voyage took, but a port spokesman said there were not many reefer boxes on board.
These, and a considerable number of other containers, could become the subject of a drawn-out legal tussle between vessel owner Japan’s Shoei Kisen Kaisha, charterer Evergreen, shippers and consignees.
It is expected that some cargo will be refused after the prolonged journey. Perhaps leading to a new moniker for the vessel, the Never Given.
