Are airline alliances going to fade out? As Qatar considers its position in oneworld, Kenya Airways looks like it might follow in the footsteps of China Southern and leave SkyTeam. The Chinese carrier was the second-largest in the alliance after Delta and Kenya is the only African member. Oneworld, meanwhile has four carriers based in the continent. Kenya Airways’ CEO claims the alliance brings little benefit, partners compete and that airline joint ventures, such as the one it has with Air France-KLM, make far more economic sense. “What advantage would we have to stay in Skyteam?” On the cargo front, Skyteam is the only alliance with a cargo element, but again Kenya’s separate relationship with KLM is stronger.
