Approaching peak season, the port of Los Angeles has something to be pleased about after recording its busiest July in its history. Container volumes were up 16% year-on-year. For the year-to-date, the port is also ahead of its record-breaking 2016 figures, by 9.5%. The performance bodes well as the industry gears up for the pre-Christmas peak over the next eight weeks. Executive director Gene Seroka was quoted in Hellenic Shipping News as acknowledging the decision by the Pacific Maritime Association and the “good men and women” of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union to extend their contract with terminal operators until 2022.
