Agency Sector Management chairman Peter MacSwiney has been appointed co-chair of the Customs Brexit group – part of the Joint Customs Consultative Committee (JCCC), which is focused on the customs issues of Brexit.
In an exclusive podcast with The Loadstar, Mr MacSwiney outlines some of the considerable challenges facing the UK as it prepares to negotiate its way out of the European Union and end its membership of the EU-wide Union Customs Code (UCC).
“You have the EFTA model, the Switzerland model and the Turkish model, and I don’t think we really like any of them, so it seems inevitable that the UK is going to have to negotiate its own deal.
“There’s nervousness about change and it’s got to be managed properly. With just-in-time inventory everything is interdependent, and you only have to break one of those links for whole supply chains to break down.
“But you know what? I really do think we are going to be OK with this. The HMRC staff are really high quality and I’m confident they have what it takes to get the job done.”
