The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the UN body responsible for shipping, and drawing up and implementing the regulations that cover international shipping, yet is has for a long time been an oddly unaccountable organisation – its press department has gained reputation over the years among maritime journalists as the living embodiment of monosyllabic. Its finances too, have long remained unclear, but this fascinating blog from IHS Maritime, which is tasked with calculating how much each flag state pays annually, sheds some much needed light.
