In shocking disrespect to the world’s seafarers there are claims unscrupulous shipowners are continuing to try and shirk their duty to pay their workers. This piece from Splash 24/7 claims the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) last year had to claw back a “staggering” $37.8m in owed wages for its members. The appalling scale of the situation sadly looks likely to become commonplace, with it already having had to chase up $15.5m in the first five months of 2019.
