This ought to be good news for India if it is true. Shipping minister GK Vasan has indicated that India’s shipping ministry is considering removing future container terminal projects in the country out from under the auspices of the Tariff Authority of Major Ports (Tamp), which currently sets terminal handling charges in all terminals – including those run by private operators – in the country’s 13 major ports. The major problem with Tamp has been that its model means that the more cargo an operator handles, the less it can charge per box, thus effectively penalising the most productive terminals. But where will the development leave those remaining under Tamp?
