In what must surely be disappointing news to many in Belgium, Lufthansa has decided to take over the remaining 55% in Brussels Airlines it didn’t already own. Over the past couple of years there have been sad murmurs from Brussels about relinquishing control to Lufthansa and not being in charge of their own destiny. Lufthansa has said it would look at ways to keep “some” of the branding – and Brussels’ routes to Africa – its cargo bread and butter – could well remain while the rest of the carrier seems likely to be merged into Eurowings. The question for cargo is whether it will be able to retain its control – as Swiss has – or whether it will be subsumed into Lufthansa Cargo – like Austrian. “The concept for bringing Brussels into the Lufthansa group must now be discussed in detail,” according to a spokesman.
