Government programmes to encourage quality and safety standards in meat production have been praised as the catalyst for a surge in India’s meat exports. Earnings from meat hit Rs 21,000 crore in 2012-2013, with poultry exports climbing 6%. Beef exports have also increased by 50% in five years, making India the world’s largest beef exporter. “Our department has played a crucial role and we are happy about it,’’ said an official with the Department of Animal Husbandry.
