Japan’s investigation into the cause of the break-up and subsequent sinking of the 8,000teu MOL Comfort off the coast of Oman earlier this year has reached its preliminary conclusions. Its chief recommendations are that all ships of that size and over should have their hulls inspected for possible “hogging”, whilst also backing the recent IMO mandate that all containers should have their declared weights verified.
